A VETERAN HAS ALL OF THE MEDALS HE EARNED IN WORLD WAR II. THIS IS A COOL STORY TO TELL YOU ABOUT TONIGHT. WE GO LIVE TO DAYTONA BEACH. THE UNIVERSITY HELPED HIM GET THESE HONORS THAT WERE MUCH DESERVED. A LITTLE LATE BUT HE GOT THEM. GREG, SCHOOL OFFICIALS TELL ME THEY SAW THIS AS THEIR HONOR AND THEIR DUTY AND ONLY FITTING THE SAME PROGRAM THAT HELPED TRAIN THIS PROGRAM IN THE 1940s FOR THIS BRAVE WORK WOULD PRESENT HIM WITH THESE OVERDUE HONORS. I HIT EVERY ONE IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC. Reporter: RICHARD CHARLES HAS VIVID MEMORIES OF HIS SERVICE IN WORLD WAR II. ONE OF THE FIRST PILOTS TO LAND ON MAINLAND JAPAN AFTER THE SURRENDER IN 1945. GOING TO SHOOT US OR GOING TO WELCOME US. [ LAUGHTER ] Reporter: WHEN THE WAR ENDED THOSE DARING MISSIONS BECAME STORIES UNTOLD. WE WERE KIDS HE WOULD NEVER DISCUSS IT. NO, NO BIG DEAL. THAT IS WHAT WE ALL DID AT THE TIME. Reporter: KNOWING HIS DAD EARNED A ARMY AIR MEDAL FOR FLYING THROUGH COMBAT ZONES HIS SON, BILL, DID HIS RESEARCH. HE FOUND FOUR MORE. Reporter: I KNEW THAT HE DID NOT KNOW IT. Reporter: AS EXPECTED, AT FIRST, DAD WAS NOT BIG ON THE FUSS. WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY FOR? [ LAUGHTER ] Reporter: HE CONNECTED WITH THE UNIVERSITY WHOSE PROGRAM WAS PART OF DAD’S TRAINING IN THE 1940s. THIS WEEK THE UNIVERSITY PROUDLY EXTENDED THE OVERDUE HONORS AND PINNED THE CAPTAIN WITH HIS MEDALS. I SIGNED UP TO TRY TO DO MY PART. IT FEELS PRETTY GOOD. Reporter: BACK AT HOME WITH THOSE HONORS NOW IN HAND. NOW YOU HAVE A LITTLE FAMILY THERE. YES, I DO. Reporter: THE CAPTAIN CALLED THE BELATED ACCOLADES, WELCOMED. I FEEL LIKE MY TIME WAS NOT WASTED.   1. He was one of the first pilots to land in Japan for the occupation and he didn't get the Occupation Medal? Don't think so. Might want to have the Air Force Review Board take a look at his discharge because he's clearly not got all of his awards after all…
