This Week with Fish and Wildlife: Life jacket safety and rules

this weekend Fish and Wildlife sponsored by her local montana toyota dealers thursday morning time once again for this week and fish and wildlife were out at the region 3 headquarters with captain Adam Pankratz this morning lifesavers that’s what we’re talking about floatation devices all of those kind of things let’s go over the rules for these things Adam I think it’s important to do that this time here yeah absolutely so life jackets life preservers you have to have one in the boat for every person if people are 12 years or under they have to be wearing their life jacket at all times no matter where they are no matter what kind of boat they’re in it’s a kayak if it’s a large boat adults again they have to have a lifejacket with them but like a seat belt or any other safety piece of equipment if you’re not wearing it it’s not going to do you any good if it’s stuffed underneath the seat you have an accident you fall out of the boat the boat flips if you don’t have your lifejacket handy or on you it’s not going to do you any good so we recommend everybody wears the lifejacket when they’re on the waterway especially springtime like now when the water is deep the water is cold in the water as fast-moving we I think most people if they had spent any time around here if you were going to go out on the Gallatin or you’re gonna go out with that you’re gonna certainly put a life jacket on and do those kind of things but we’re talking about water we’re talking about any place where there’s a body of water these rules apply absolutely so if you’re gonna go whitewater rafting you’re obviously gonna put on a life jacket probably a helmet you’re gonna be safe but if you’re out at one of the local ponds like spring meadow and Helena or East Gallatin recreation or boughs and pond and Bozeman sometimes life jackets aren’t what you’re thinking about but you know in the last 20 years 70 percent of the fatalities that have occurred on our waterways have been in non motorized boats things like kayaks tubes rafts things like that you look at a small body of water like that you’re thinking swimming hole you know when I’m swimming I don’t have one but all it takes is getting out a little too far a little too deep not having your life jacket handy an accident occurs and next thing you know you go under and there are so many different kinds of I mean we have all those examples here today find one that’s gonna fit you I would think would be important as well absolutely very important so every lifejacket tells you what type it is on the label that also tells you the weight limit very important for children especially to find the right size lifejacket and same with adults you don’t want something that you can’t bunk up buckle and with a kid you don’t want one that’s gonna flip off a good way to test is to put the lifejacket on your on your child adjust it and then lift them up by the lifejacket if you can flip the lifejacket off of them if they fall out of the lifejacket it’s too big again what’s the Disco over the ages again because I think that’s important that the lifejacket has to be on at all times yeah so children under 12 have to have a lifejacket at all times no matter what type of vessel they’re on if they’re on a pontoon on the lake the rafting down the river or they’re on one of the local ponds in a kayak or a paddleboard especially they also have to have a lifejacket those who are operating personal watercraft like a jet ski always have to have a lifejacket on no matter if they’re adult or child and then adults and people over 12 years old have to have a lifejacket in the boat and readily accessible any questions on that I would think you’d be able to find some of that online at your website yeah absolutely we have brochures and a lot of information on fw PMT gov that’s perfect again captain Adam Pankratz oh we are out at region 3 headquarters safety rules if you have any questions of course the websites the best source of that Adam thank you very much this week in Fish & Wildlife was sponsored by Toyota let’s go places
