This Special Training Keeps Astronauts From Vomiting Everywhere


Some people are incredible human beings, who
are mentally and physically so special they earn their place among the select few we call
astronauts. And some people get sick to their stomachs
riding in a car let alone blasting off on a rocket, or heaven forbid in a car on a rocket. And sometimes those people are one and the
same. Thanks to one woman though, talented astronauts
don’t have to be sidelined because their stomachs can’t keep their shrimp cocktail down. Her name is Dr. Patricia Cowings, and she
led the development of the Autogenic-Feedback Training, or AFT. Your autonomic nervous system controls things
you don’t normally think about, like your heart rate, breathing, sweating, digestion,
that sort of thing. And if you’ve ever experienced motion sickness
you may notice those things start to spiral out of control. Dr. Cowings’ training teaches astronauts
how to control what they usually can’t. 50% of astronauts will get motion sick in
space, which makes sense. Your floating and everything is moving and
orbiting… Cowings’ method achieves this by figuring
out where the trainee’s resting levels are, and then strapping them into a rotating chair
that spins the bejesus out of them. Once Cowings knows how stress affects the
trainee, she teaches them autogenic therapy techniques that focus their attention on something
like the sensation in their fingertips. Trainees are taught to focus so well that
they don’t pay attention to anything else like the room spinning round and round. By changing their reaction to stress, trainees
can keep over two dozen bodily systems in check and their lunch down. The AFT method is actually something you can
learn too (sort of). It’s basic operant conditioning, just think
Pavlov’s dogs that were trained to salivate at the sound of a bell…You can train humans
to control their heart rate! All you have to do, says Dr Cowing’s paper
on the topic, is ‘remove the blindfold’ or teach yourself to perceive your heart rate,
your stress level, and so on. Astronauts were put in a rotating chair that
rotated at a different speed from the wall of the room (which were going the opposite direction)
and asked to assess their stress level and autonomic functions every five minutes. Over just a few hours, with the right reinforcement,
they learned to understand their responses and control them! The uses go beyond preventing a mess inside
your space helmet. Astronauts can use these techniques to help
them perform better in stressful situations, or sleep better in microgravity. And amazingly training only takes six hours
over the course of about three weeks. Dr. Cowings work helps astronauts prepare
for the rigors of space, something few of us could probably imagine. Not Dr. Cowings though because before developing
this training for astronauts she went through the rigamarole herself, and holds the distinction
of being not just the first African-American woman to receive scientist astronaut training,
she was the first American woman trained full stop. Dr. Cowings has been contributing science
at NASA for years and we’re happy to celebrate her achievements for Black History Month. If you think this channel has the right stuff

  5. Thanks as a black man I’ll be overjoyed one day. When I walk in a room of white men,and none of them are surprised that I’m intelligent 😩. Goes the same for black men too, but that’s usually a city raised south raised issue. This is only because u never see a man of color in most science text books. This is why black history month is important.

  6. From my youngest memories i always wondered how to controle things bodies do with instinct and tried controling it myself ( heart beat, digestion, breathing ect. ). Now a can be awar of them and even controle them to a certain limite, but i never thought it was actually something that important.
    PS: dont try to stop you heart, just take this advice 😉

  11. Some people are incredible and special? Astronauts are in no way unique, it's comparable to singing and acting. Right place, right time, and who do you know. It's like humans with more than one set of dna, no one has any idea how common this may be as not all humans are tested.

  12. Pavlov is NOT operant conditioning. That’s classical conditioning. Salivating is not a voluntary action, so it’s classical conditioning and not operant. However, I agree that the training for space simulation is in fact operant. Sorry I had to say that.

Hey Dnews, i just had a question that through the course of evolution how come we have developed so many different forms of communications especially languages which are so distinct that we need to get to learn them in order to use them.why can't they have been similar if we humans started as a single species who developed vocals words and gestures..?

  17. Operant conditioning is rewarding or punishing a behavior to increase or decrease its frequency. Pavlov's dogs were using classical conditioning, the process of pairing a neutral stimulus with a natural stimulus to cause the dogs to react to the neutral stimulus the same way they would ready to food.

    It was a manaquin in a car on a robot.

    And I have yet to hear an explanation of the song playing. There is no air in the car, and hence no sound. So how is that song playing exactly? Is it an mp3 causing speaker oscillations that WOULD make that sound if there were air? Is it just laying that track over the video feed being sent back to Earth? I just don't know!

  21. Thanks! This sounds like a combination of pretty standard techniques, put together in a very useful & powerful way. One involves simple concentration. Another is meant to circumvent avoidance behavior; by "removing the blindfold," the subject is directly dealing with the thing that normally upsets their system. Instead of getting caught up in a cycle of negatively reacting to your negative reaction, you face it by focusing at a conscious level on your body's functioning. Some of this involves a common form of meditation, but redirected toward concentrating in a proactive way on your own body. Then, you use simple biofeedback response; learning to lower your heart rate, for instance. This avoids the negative feedback loop by turning into a positive control loop. I'd say it sounds like it would be pretty effective. The main thing to remember is not to tense up – either physically or mentally. Relax, and realize that you can control many of the otherwise autonomic responses of your own body. Here in the west, we tend so often to either suffer through unpleasant reactions of our bodies, or depend on drugs to control those responses for us. This is much better. Good going! Thanks again.
