The story behind the medal: LTCDR Alexandra Haughey

I received the Greater Middle East General
Service Medal when I was on deployment on HMNZS Te Kaha in 2015. I was part of a six month deployment basically around the world. We conducted maritime security and counter-narcotics operations. As part of that deployment we managed to search several dhows (little boats) and we seized and destroyed about 235 million dollars worth of high grade heroin and not
only did it take that high grade heroin off the streets as it were but it also removed
some of the funding sources to terrorism in the greater Middle East. When I’m at home we do what is typical for service people I think and now most New Zealanders, we go to a dawn service and we also go to a civic service where we’re able to pay our respects but also enjoy our comradeship with our fellow serving and past serving people and with family as well. Last year was the first year that I was able to take our daughter and my husband and I had a conversation about whose medal she’d get to wear because he’s served as well. I won that year, so we’ll see what happens this year

  1. I hope when I join the RNZN and work on one of our Frigates I can do something like what Te Kaha did over and earn that medal
