Salvation Army shelter to close

a warming shelter scheduled to close for good this morning will stay open one more night the Salvation Army will allow people to stay at its shelter on Weber street tonight because of the low temperatures in the forecast bacardi o news channel 13 Dana Molina reports that after tonight those people are out of options it's a place where more than a hundred people seek shelter from the cold every night when warm I were sleeping that's the big thing last year about 1,400 people use the shelter this year that number grew to more than 1500 but after two years this warming shelter is closing its doors it's actually been a really huge help especially during the winter snowstorms when the glaciers have come in and they've actually provided us with meals they've given us warmth and the staff here has been really awesome and it's it's kind of a sad day right now the Salvation Army Staff says this shelter was never meant to be permanent they promised a community it would only be a two-year project now we're going to focus all of our resources back on what we've been doing for 125 years here in El Paso County and that's the feeding sheltering and that restorative component and that's one of the things that this shelter kind of lakhs for us is that restorative components last night the shelter hosted a lot more than 120 people that's below their full capacity the Salvation Army Staff says everyone knew this closing was coming we've been telling them to try to find other places we've been working with some of them to find other places to go so that they're not left outside for many like Katheryn shields that's still in the works my husband and I we are really struggling for a little while because we have nowhere else to go and we have very little supplies to us we back to have jobs we want to stop doing this but shield says it's getting to a point where it's hard not to give up in Colorado Springs Dana Molina KRDO news channel and coming up in our next half hour we'll hear more from the Salvation Army on that decision to stay open tonight
