when his cobra gunship helicopter was brought down by hostile fire in Vietnam May fifth nineteen seventy and quan pray province both pilots were killed while giving close support to an American unit that was in heavy contact and being entrapped extracted their aircraft had already taken several hits if they continued giving the close fire support the proof crucial for the accomplishment of the mission on their last pass they received intense enemy fire resulting the loss of the aircraft for their actions both pilots received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism on May nineteenth nineteen sixty eight blackjack 01 was the call sign for an f4 phantom crewed by Alexandria resident major Joseph Davies major Davies aircraft which one of two f-4s engaged in ground attack mission against the North vampaneze command center for the hotly contested Ho Chi Minh Trail the site was heavily defended with anti-aircraft guns mounted on trucks in on platforms in the trees blackjack 01 dropped the coordinates over the target but failed to rejoin its wingman for the return flight to base major Davies and his fellows fellow crew member were listed as m.i.a but their remains were never found major Davies left behind the wife and four sons now whatever knows the impact that a loss like that can have on a family but in this case everyone at major Davies for boys grew up to become army officers and continued the proud family tradition of military service now 11 days before blackjack 01 was lost another Alexandria resident lost his life in Vietnam a nine million 1969 corporal James Ward's platoon returning from a combat patrol came under heavy fire from the superior well-concealed force reacting instantly corporal war deployed his squad and directed counter and the enemy unit one of his team pinned down and taking casualties corporal Ward led four Marines across the fire swept terrain with his late anti-tank assault weapon quickly destroyed an enemy emplacement and reaching the side of one of his wounded men he quickly administered first aid after speaking words of encouragement to the young marine he moved through enemy fire to the second injured marine unable to drag that ring to safety corporal Ward was boldly attempting to lift the wounded marine onto his shoulders when he's mortally injured by enemy fire now as a footnote corporal James Ward served in Jim Webb's platoon in Vietnam and served as the inspiration for the character snake the web's novel fields of fire now these three heroes Sean Mashburn Joseph Davies and james warren are just three of the 67 days carved in granite the wall surrounding this beautiful Plaza
