Military Families: “It’s Almost as if it was Created for our Family.”

Say hi. Hi! Say it again. What’s this? I made this by myself and I was very
hard to make, and it’s a Minecraft diamond pickaxe. You know, Operation Hero is by no means meant to take the place of a parent, but it’s you know it’s almost
as if it was written for somebody like myself who’s a single parent whose child
could benefit from spending a little bit of extra time with some creativity, so that was very good very good program
that he participated in. So, it was about three years ago that my
wife passed away just shortly after her 40th birthday. And a very rough time, but
going to different programs such as some of the programs of that the Y has had to offer has helped. In Operation Hero, we try to pull out the three core
elements for the Y. We’re very aware that as the military,
they do have special needs and having the resources available to them like,
what are some good parenting things that they could be doing at home, or just even
find activities that could be doing with their families. This is a ship I made, and I worked very hard on it. I enrolled Andrew in Operation Hero here on Fort Leonard Wood based
upon one of his teacher’s recommendations. He was always a very sweet boy, but very
quiet, very shy. Not really wanting to share too much, and
the biggest change that I was able to see is that he just felt more
comfortable talking about things that were important in his life and things
that he was having to deal with at his young age. They had a chance to meet up
after school, and so rather than just going to his normal day care setting, he
would spend some time with the Y staff there, and they would help him go
through some of his homework. They played games. He loves to spend time on the computer. Being a single parent and a soldier
presents its challenges, but at the same time, there are programs like the Y, and the
school-age services where he can go to get a little bit more care and attention
than he would by just going to a babysitter. We do realize that there are all kinds
of military kids, that they have unique challenges, and you know they’re needing
those other people to kind of give them an outlet, or to understand where they’re
coming from and to kind of be on their side too. Well you know I also made that
by myself. What does that say? I can’t read the words. You can go do. I love you, daddy.
