Military drills conducted in China to counter terrorism, separatism and extremism

China, Russia and several of their Central
Asian neighbours have conducted live military drills in northern China. Footage shows military aircraft and tanks
firing at simulated targets in mountainous areas near at a training base in Inner Mongolia
region State media reported the joint exercises,
named “Peace Mission 2014,” run until August 29th and aim to counter terrorism, separatism
and extremism. Around 7,000 soldiers from the ground and
air forces of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, are taking part along with regional heavyweights
China and Russia. The drill involves drones, air defence missiles,
tanks and armored vehicles, to simulate a strike against a separatist organisation attempting
to split the country. The government blames violence in Xinjiang
and other parts of the country on Islamist separatists, who, it says, want to establish
an independent state called East Turkestan.
