Canley came up to me and he had a piece
of shrapnel still in there sticking out between his eyebrow and his eyeball. I pulled it out. And he said, “I want that on the spot report.” I call it the three missing days in Marine Corps history. Words were never documented anywhere. Due
to the nature of the battle we had no officers. The only thing I was doing was just
responding. The Marines, the young Marines, it shows them it’s not do as I say it’s as do as I do. Just being that close to them
brings motivation to them. During firefights when we’d be all hugging
Mother Earth, he’d be standing up directing us and I think if you talk to every
Alpha Company Marine, we were amazed that he was never shot. My legacy was about taking care of Marines. Because I don’t think anyone that there was anyone that was more demanding than Gunnery Sgt. Canley. The guy is a special, special leader in Marine Corps history and we would have lost those three days. Now this is for you, it was an honor to be your leader. You made my job easy.
