Canley came up to me and he had a piece
of shrapnel still in there sticking out between his eyebrow and his eyeball. I pulled it out. And he said, “I want that on the spot report.” I call it the three missing days in Marine Corps history. Words were never documented anywhere. Due
to the nature of the battle we had no officers. The only thing I was doing was just
responding. The Marines, the young Marines, it shows them it’s not do as I say it’s as do as I do. Just being that close to them
brings motivation to them. During firefights when we’d be all hugging
Mother Earth, he’d be standing up directing us and I think if you talk to every
Alpha Company Marine, we were amazed that he was never shot. My legacy was about taking care of Marines. Because I don’t think anyone that there was anyone that was more demanding than Gunnery Sgt. Canley. The guy is a special, special leader in Marine Corps history and we would have lost those three days. Now this is for you, it was an honor to be your leader. You made my job easy.

  6. A War had divided America and forgot American Heros. Furthermore, the rewards for a hero soldier has been so long forgotten. A soldier had defined for his actions in the battle of Huế -1968. Apparently, John Canley is a true hero and he deserves recognition. However, still have many American soldiers heroes of the Vietnam War, need recognition and deserve to rewards. Congratulations and best wishes to John Canley.

    After I was hearing the story of retired Sgt. Maj. John Canley a heroic of 'Vietnam Veterans' during the battlefield of Huế 1968. 'The battle Tet Offensive in 1968'.
    Moreover, at the ceremony the Medal Honor for Sgt. Maj. John Canley, the President Trump is sharing story of John Canley and his actions half of a century ago.
    Therefore, Sgt. Maj. John Canley story is emotions me, so I write a few lines of Vietnamese poetry, donated to Sgt. John Canley with a title: Anh (ai) nhớ Huế Xưa.

    Anh (ai) đến Huế đầu mùa xuân máu đổ (Tết 1968)
    Chiến đấu đêm ngày chiếm lại Thành Đô
    Tết Mậu Thân (Tet 1968) khăn tăng phủ đầy mồ
    Cộng sản bắt người chặt đầu chôn sống
    Cố Đô Huế trong điêu tàn ác mộng
    Đổ nát, đau thương, tăng tóc ngập trời.

    Anh (ai) xa Huế ngày tháng nào năm ấy

  8. Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.

These are the brave and thank you for all of that serve I was in the marines for two years but I was injured but now I serve my country and community as a police officer I've been in law enforcement for nine years and about three months ago I graduated from swat school top of the class and in January I'm going to Quantico Virginia to train with the FBI I'm really excited about that so to all of my jarheads leathernecks and my Devil Dogs Out There Semper Fidelis always faithful and oorah!!!! And to my fallen brothers and sisters in the marine corps we thank you for all of your sacrifices you made to protect us and to keep us safe god bless you and may you rest in peace

  10. We were 8 miles from Hue when the TET started on January 31, 1968  We knew something big was going on up in Hue but we had no idea 10,000 NVA took over the city. We kept saying, why is it taking 2/5 so long to clear the city?  We had two battalions of Marine Artillery at Phu Bai and we kept waiting for orders to support 1/1, 2/5 and 3/5. It never came.  Only after several days did we send one of our 155 up to support the Marines.  We could of saved a lot of Marines lives.  Semper Fi Brothers.
