MC Perry High School’s JROTC honor military, Memorial Day

Matthew C Perry High School’s Junior
Reserve Officers Training Corps “Samurai” Company held a Memorial Day ceremony
featuring a wall displaying names of military members being honored on Marine
Corps Air Station Iwakuni. The event served as a way to remind students the
significance and meaning behind the federal holiday. “They need to understand
what Memorial Day is about and the freedoms that they have, the things that
they do, that the reason they have this school at all is because we’ve had
service men and women who have given their lives for their country and
allowed them to have the things that they have now”. During the ceremony
speakers talked about historical traditions, gave honors for those who
have passed and recounted personal experiences. A booklet was provided for
attendees to write more names that would be added to the wall. “What I personally
took away from this ceremony is that everyone has lost someone and they might
not even have been a service member but it’s important to always remember them,
whether or not they’re service members it’s always important. They gave their
lives for our freedom and that’s one of the most important things we have right
now”. The school plans to continue using the wall for future Memorial Day
ceremonies. Reporting from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan, I’m Petty
Officer 3rd Class Kyleigh Williams.
