Goodwill incident unrelated to serial bomber; military ordnance was mishandled

IT IS 10:00, WE WELCOME YOU TO KXAN NEWS AT 10:00, FOLLOWING BREAKING NEWS TONIGHT. WE KNOW THE DEVICE THAT WENT OFF IN SOUTH AUSTIN WAS NOT A BOMB. SYDNEY: POLICE SAY IT WAS NOT RELATED TO A SERIES OF PACKAGE EXPLOSIONS IN THE AUSTIN AREA, BUT NO LESS TERRIFYING FOR FOLKS IN THAT AREA. THE DEVICE WENT OFF ON BRODIE LANE NEAR SLAUGHTER LANE. WE KNOW THE DEVICE WAS SOME SORT OF A MILITARY MEMENTO. IT IS SO EASY TO SEE HOW THIS HAPPENED, CLEANING OUT AN ATTIC, TO COME ACROSS THIS STUFF. IT SOUNDS LIKE THE EMPLOYEE THAT FOUND IT DID NOT THINK IT WAS SOMETHING GOODWILL WOULD WANT. IT WAS HANDED TO ANOTHER EMPLOYEE TO GET RID OF IT, AND AS THAT EMPLOYEE WAS GOING THROUGH SOME OF THE ITEMS, THAT MEMENTO DISCHARGE. THAT’S HOW THE INDIVIDUAL GOT INJURED. ROBERT: LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. BRITTANY GLAS BACK AT THE SCENE. BRITTANY: WE HEARD TONIGHT FROM THE ASSISTANT CHIEF OF AUSTIN POLICE, WHO TOLD US ULTIMATELY WHAT HAPPENED AT THE GOODWILL STORE. A GOODWILL EMPLOYEE HAD FOUND A BOX SOMEONE HAD DROPPED OUT THAT CONTAINED SOME ITEMS THAT EMPLOYEE DID NOT THINK THE GOODWILL WANTED TO HAVE. HE HAD PASSED AT THE BOX OFFICE OR ANOTHER EMPLOYEE, WHO WAS TOLD TO DISPOSE OF THE BOX. THAT EMPLOYEE TOLD — TOOK A BOX AROUND THE CORNER, AND LOOKING INSIDE, IT HAD TWO SMALL DEVICES THAT WERE ARTILLERY SIMULATORS THAT LOOKS LIKE SOME TYPE OF MILITARY ORDINANCE OR MEMENTO. THE EMPLOYEE HANDLED ONE OF THOSE DEVICES, AT WHICH POINT IT INITIATED. THE EMPLOYEE SUSTAINED AN INJURY. BRITTANY: ASSISTANT CHIEF REYES SAID EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS A TRAVIS COUNTY CALL, AUSTIN POLICE RESPONDED BECAUSE IT WAS AN EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. YOU CAN IMAGINE, WITH ALL OF THE INCIDENTS THAT HAVE BEEN GOING AROUND IN THE AUSTIN AREA RECENTLY, WE RESPONDED TO THIS WITH OUR TEAM AS LONG — AS WELL AS FEDERAL PARTNERS TO INVESTIGATE THIS, JUST AS WE DID ALL THE REST OF THE INCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED IN THE CITY AS AN EXPOSE OF DEVICE. — AN EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. AFTER OUR INVESTIGATION ON SCENE, WE DID DETERMINE THAT THIS WAS NOT AN EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. THIS INCIDENT IS NOT RELATED TO ANY OF THE OTHER INCIDENTS WE HAVE HAD IN AUSTIN. BRITTANY: THE BOTTOM LINE HERE TONIGHT, EVEN THOUGH THIS INCIDENT IS NOT RELATED, AUSTIN POLICE SAID, THEY DO HAVE A MESSAGE FOR THE COMMUNITY. WE WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY. WE WANT ALL OF THESE INCIDENTS RESOLVED AND WE WANT THEM SOLVED QUICKLY AND WE CAN DO THAT TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY WITH YOUR HELP. BRITTANY: AUSTIN POLICE HAVE BEEN SENDING THAT MESSAGE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. IF YOU THINK THERE IS ANY

  1. I have a question: why would anyone call a street “West Slaughter Ave”? Why not drop the ‘S’ and have simply called “West Laughter Ave”.
