Gainesville's Old Army Reserve

w UF teasley neska chetty joins us now with more on the property Liana this property hasn't been used for a while but it still does not belong to the city so why now is the Commission deciding to talk about it well Morgan win the contract for this was initially signed back in nineteen fifty there was a clause in there that stated when the army was done with this property it would revert back to the city and city officials tell me that's supposed to happen pretty soon here now the massive red brick armory and the several acres of land that surround it have SAT untouched since 2009 but now local and city commissioners are working together to develop this property for the public despite some expensive setbacks but this would ideally be our main play area where there would be Mandy milham has a day job and is involved in the Gainesville community whenever she can be but for the past two years she's dedicated her leftover time to her labor of love restoring gainesville's old armory it's hopeful and it's positive and it's better than what we have gotten help for sure she's president of friends of reserve Park a community group dedicated to turning this land into use for the community I would reject that were motivated enough to have a park for sure in the 2015 year in mid-december the city approved a draft action plan to look at potential options for the property that includes setting boundaries for a park community garden and a memorial to the reservists who used to serve there but the change is easier said than done a study of the building found lead paint mold and asbestos in the pipes and tiles the roof also needs to be replaced in the next five to eight years in November city officials estimated the asbestos remediation alone would cost more than 350,000 dollars but milham and other board members say they'll cross that bridge when they get to it their number one priority now is getting a public park if we can just keep on top of keeping the air conditioner on low so we don't have a mold problem later you know if we can do preventive maintenance basically I think we'll be fine you know get get the land going clean it up get it vibrant again and then I think the right opportunity for the building will present itself there's nothing here and I think it's vital to the children in the neighborhood to the neighborhood itself to have something positive go there despite the challenges they're determined to make the most of this opportunity sometimes when I when I need a reminder and an extra push to keep moving with it I just like past the property and imagine all the kids and the families that are going to have a really beautiful safe place to play and enjoy the space and melam said it's hard to estimate a timeline on the project especially because they're still waiting for confirmation from the army to officially hand the property over but the group will be meeting on Tuesday at East End eatery to talk with architectural developers if you'd like to learn more about the old armor you can visit WFT org and search reserve
