Don't Buy This Backpack – AmazonBasics Hiking Backpack

my name is Luke this is the outdoor gear review and it is test day here with the Amazon 55 liter pack this is a very budget-friendly backpack which I picked up on Amazon for $51 I believe now already we've discussed this pack we went over the features stats and all that good stuff now let's begin with the testing we are going out for a multi mile hike into the backcountry and what I love about this trail is that it is really really steep now when it comes to the weight of this pack and the gear that I'm carrying we are looking at 31 pounds in total this pack is loaded up for an overnight adventure sleep a bag tent sleeping pad food water gear all that stuff so we could see how comfortable this pack is out on the trail for me this is just part one of testing out this product I will be testing this pack out for weeks for months maybe even longer there's no telling when the review will come up I want to make sure that I know the insides outsides good bad in between I want to know everything and it's all about giving you all the best information possible so you can make the right decision for yourself now before really focusing on this pack and how its performing so far I'd like for you to know that this channel is 100% agenda free meaning I have no store no affiliates no amazon connections I make zero profit when it comes to gear reviews and what you purchase I don't care if you purchase anything it benefits me not so with that big said so let's focus on this pack the amazonbasics 55 litre let's get to it I'm roughly a quarter of a mile into this trip here what are my thoughts well to be 100% honest with you this pack is way more comfortable than I thought it would be now of course we're going downhill that may change coming back up that's when the true test begins but as it stands right now just going down the mountain it's comfortable it really is the one thing that I've noticed here is that the waist belt really is small now that benefits someone like myself who's smaller individual of a 32 inch waist and this fits me perfectly but for larger individuals this may not be a good choice it may be too small there is an issue that's beginning to present itself with this pack I am continuously having to adjust the straps namely the load lifters the buckles are not doing a good job of keeping it nice and tight so I'm having to continuously adjust it the pack has actually gotten to the point now where it won't hold the tension at all I can pull it tight and it pulls back so the issues with the straps continue not only for the load lifters but also for the harness itself anyone up for some ice skating this pack has problems guys unfortunately the hardware that's included on this pack with the buckles the straps and so on it's terrible it's just terrible nothing is holding any tension load lifters the harness system I actually have been measuring the harness system and over the last quarter mile it's lost about an inch and a half of tension the straps have stretched out that much so the fit is now off all right so this is one mile in so that's one mile down we will turn around here go back up one mile to the parking area this is a pretty good test of this pack a good initial test I mean already it's presenting the pros and some cons to this pack I mean right off the bat the hardware sucks maybe another half inch since the last time I mentioned it this thing is stretched out it goes from being comfortable to not comfortable very very quickly and it's because the hardware simply does not hold the straps in place and it's actually getting worse it is this side now doesn't want to hold tension just like the other side didn't want to it's time to head back up the mountain let's see how this pack does now this is kind of funny kind of because the harness system is just stretching right the waist belt continues to pull my pants down it slacks the waist belt slides down and it takes my pants with it this strap right here just came loose and gave about the whole inch oh this is awful Wow this is simply unbelievably bad now as I'm hiking up the mountain here I'm taking some long strides and one thing that I've noticed is that this backpack has a bounce to it when you're taking those big steps up and down the backpack actually shakes it vibrates and that is likely due to the frame sheet the frame sheet for this pack is simply a piece of plastic that has some aluminum stays in it they are not formed for your back they're completely flat it's funny how you can go in with certain expectations be surprised in a good way and then within a mile be floored how awful a product is just like that just like that well that was an interesting test of the Amazon pack to start off with I was impressed but now only after two miles I'm not impressed not at all the hardware is what ruins this backpack I mean this is a very budget-friendly backpack 51 bucks but I mean for 51 dollars you could buy a really nice pack a name-brand pack I mean heck you could get a North Face backpack for the same price used of course but you can find those deals all day long you know what else is interesting about this pack it's maxed out on the torso length I'm not a very tall guy my torso length is right at 19 inches and that's where this pack is so if you have any torso link that is longer than mine this pack would not work for you so taller individuals I would not recommend this pack at all if you had your eyes on this backpack I would suggest not buying it until I get done with my review as mentioned before I have a lot of testing to do still but to start off not very good results with the Amazon basics 55 liter pack do not go get the 65 or the 75 wait for the review if you happen to have any experience with this pack make sure to comment down below I would appreciate it and so would anybody else who's considering this pack thanks for watching thumbs up if you liked it subscribe support on patreon until next time strengthen honor you

  1. North Face is mentioned in this video, but there is no comparison. Are the straps really that poor? Do that go for all AmazonBasics backpacks? I was thinking of buying their camera hiking backpack.

  2. THESE CHEEPER BACKPACK GIVE YOU THE DESIGNS YOU WANT AN ARE USEFUL. LIKE SIDE POCKETS THAT ZIPPEN UP AN A REAR POCKET THAT ZIPPEN UP. THIS PACK LOOK TO BE AN OLDER DESIGN OF A MILATTARY PACK. I OWN AN OLDER OSPREY 70L PACK AN THE NEWER PRETTY MUCH THE SAME NO OUTER POCKET THAT ZIPPEN UP. I OWNED A CAMP & FEILD, AN KELTY PACK AN I LOVED THEM BECAUSE THEY HAD HUGE SIDE POCKETS WITH ZIPPER. THE CAMP AN FIELD HAD MESH POCKETS AN A DETACHABLE REAR BACKPACK. THEY BOTH HAD SLIDE PASS SIDE POCKETS. ITS NEARLY IMPOSSABLE TO FIND THIS TYPES OF PACKS NEW. THIS NEW LARGER PACKS SUCK NOT BE CAUSE OF QUALITY BUT BECAUSE OF DESIGN. I LIKE THE MILATTARY STYLE PACKS BECAUSE OF THE MOLLE WEBBING IT GIVE YOU MORE CHOICES FOR ROOM FOR OUTER POCKETS AN ATTACHMENTS. LIKE YOUR VEDIO'S KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. DONT NO WHY CHEEPER BACKPACK GIVE YOU A MORE USABLE DESIGN???

  3. Can you please review this pack-it would be greatly appreciated https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07MVXK1L5/ref=twister_B07MVWK3B8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

  4. This pack looks great it is a very solid build the zippers are awesome lots of straps and it comes in at about 5lbs . However it unfortunately is not at all usable for any kind of hike of more that a mile or so and the only thing I could find bad about the bag is a huge problem. The straps will not hold position for more than a few steps with out slipping and this makes this bag useless. Look good ,great price but not at all useable

  5. So I was afraid to comment because everyone agrees with your review and I am a subscriber and I appreciate all your gear reviews. I have the 65L pack which was a gift to me and I only took on 1 hike 2 mile hike, it was fully loaded and I didn't have any of the problems you described, I'm a beginner when it comes to hiking and previously I've been using a military medium alice pack and I have to say that I really like this Amazon pack a lot more than the alice pack, its Definately more comfortable but I've only used 1 time , I'm not a big guy, I'm only 5'6 with a 32 in waist, I guess ill see how it really performs when I use more. Anyway thanks for your review and all your videos!

  6. So I've had the 75 liter for a few months. I've put about 35-40 trail miles on it. I didn't have any of the issues you had. All my straps have stayed nice and tight.

  7. Thanks brother …I was just going to order it..so can you recommend any good ruckshacks / adventure backpacks in the same range

  8. You seem trustworthy and I like your honesty, with that could you suggest a pack for a 5 day trek? That going to break my bank, also do you still feel strong about the Bushcraft USA tarps ? Thanks

  9. Thanks for the review, truly helpful for folks looking for a economical pack. I learned the hard way trying to save a few bucks!! Purchased a Kelly 65, to do the 100 wilderness trail of the AT, the pack had some great features, but the harness system failed, the Velcro that held the shoulder straps did not hold, had to tighten the waist belt to the point my hips were raw by the end of the hike, returned the pack and bought an Osprey, more money, but can hike in comfort! A review should would have been helpful. In all fairness the Kelty had some great features, but if the pack isn’t comfortable nothing else really matters!!

  10. This happened to me and I replaced all the clips for approx. $7 bucks and it did the trick. To bad the Mfg. didn't take the time to make it better.

  11. Excellent review. I bought this pack last spring for backpacking. I am a larger man. I wear a 3XLT shirt, so I purchased the 75 liter pack. It fit rather well and was very comfortable (Thank you Back Length Adjustment!!!) Although I agree that the belt was small.
I never experienced the hardware failure that you were having. I am sure it is because I have the straps almost maxed out.
What was a complete failure was the internal frame. I live in Idaho and in the mountains the temperature swings from freezing at night to possibly 90°+ in the afternoon. Day two in the Sawtooths the internal frame was squeaking… Loud! This made the hike to the second lake take forever… In my mind. As soon as camp was set up I disassembled the pack and slathered the plastic sheet frame with a half tube of Neosporin. Vaseline would have been better. It helped.

Pros: it's tough as nails. Loads of room and load capacity. It holds whatever you desire. It has a fully adjustable back length adjustment. Tons of straps. Perfect set up for your hydration bladder. It's super comfortable.

Cons: I will not list them all.
The brain is sewn on!!! No way to remove it. It will always be in the way.
The sleeping bag pocket is fine for a child's light weight hot weather sleeping bag. My 20 below mummy bag will not fit. Nor will it fit in the main compartment in it's stuff bag. WTF! It lived strapped to the bottom of the pack slapping my ass the entire trip. Might as well have had a framed pack.
The mesh pockets do not have clearance for a Smart Water bottle.
The interior plastic "frame". @%$# £*@ Amazon!!! Do not buy this if you are hunting. You will be scaring game away for miles. But on a positive note, no need for a bear bell.

  12. I shouldn't of suggested that maybe you can add more hardware for the straps to pull through so one will hold the other one from sliding or slipping

  13. The straps look a little thin(but I could be way off on that). Is it the(no doubt) cheap plastic hardware? I nearly always have to; tweak, repair or re-engineer stuff I buy, but I can make junk work.
