Welcome back to Defence Team News, I’m Ronald Edma. And I’m Lt(N) Jamie Bresolin. Here are the headlines at Defence. ♪ February is Black History Month. A time to honour the legacy of black Canadians, past and present. This month, all Defence Team members should take the time to gain insight into the experiences of black Canadians and our vital role in the community. As Canadians, we are inspired by the often forgotten black veterans “having to overcome challenges just to enlist in the military in earlier eras”. Throughout history, black Canadians have made tremendous contributions to the Defence Team, both as uniformed members, and as civilian Defence employees. As outlined in Canada’s defence policy Strong, Secure, Engaged, the Canadian Armed Forces will offer full-time summer employment to Army Reservists in their first four years with the Reserves – starting this summer. We recently spoke with Brigadier-General Rob MacKenzie, Chief of Staff for the Army Reserve, to talk more about this new initiative. Sir, how are the Canadian Army Reserves changing and why?  The Canadian Army Reserves is changing as part of an entire change for the Primary Reserve as a result of the Strong, Secure, Engaged defence policy. There’s a number of initiatives and a couple key initiatives are recruiting and an expedited recruiting process to get people in as quickly as we can. And also, in growth, a full-time summer employment which offers extra opportunities to Canadian youth and people in school and so on. What about young people with little to no experience – are the Army Reserves for them? Absolutely. This goes back to how we want to grow and train people in the Army Reserve. And really full-time summer employment is a key initiative there where someone with little or no job experience can, in their first four years in the Army Reserve, see a summer job through May to the end of August. What would college and university students gain from joining the Army Reserves? So there are programs to parallel their tracks within whatever school that is, whether it’s a college or university or vocational technical school. But really it’s about the needs of a young person while they’re going to school. They have larger blocks of time, four months in the summer, May to August. They can have full-time employment that’s meaningful and that can give them unique job experience that they can translate to their profession.   2. Ahh, I am 17 ( this year April) and I'm in the process of getting enrolled into the reserves ( 39 CBG ) . Good to know I'll have the opportunity to do full time employment but sadly I want to do summer school, meaning I have to do my BMQ next year.

  3. ok cool, black people made quite the contribution for our military and country, therefore, black history month. But why is there no Asian history month considering they have made bigger contributions to Canada's success. If we're gonna start making holidays for a specific ethnic group, why is there not one for every ethic group? How about having human history month or canadian history month? We are all humans and most importantly, CANADIANS. Quite frankly, I'm tired of these separation/division between races.
