Community shows appreciation for students joining military after graduation

OLENTANGY SCHOOL DISTRICT MADE A BIG DECISION. MARK: THEY SIGNED ON THE DOTTED LINE TO JOIN THE MILITARY FOLLOWING GRADUATION. THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY SHOWED THEIR APPRECIATION TODAY. NBC4’S ELYSE CHENGERY WAS THERE, AND JOINS US LIVE FROM OLENTANGY ORANGE HIGH SCHOOL TONIGHT. ELYSE: IT’S A BIG DECISION AS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO AFTER GRADUATION. FOR 13 STUDENTS HERE THEY SIGNED TO JOIN THE MILITARY. TODAY WE MET BRYCE KOSI AND JUST LIKE MYSELF HE KNEW AT THE AGE OF 8 WHAT HE WANTED TO BE WHEN HE GROWS UP. “I WANT TO BE INFANTRY A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T CHOOSE THAT JOB BUT IT JUST SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD FIT BE BEST” “THE REASON WHY I’M DOING THIS IS JUST I LOVE MY COUNTRY” HE ALONG WITH 12 OF HIS CLASSMATES WERE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR DECISION TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY. GREG FLOWERS A PROUD VETERAN, BROUGHT THE IDEA UP OF A SIGNING-DAY TO THE SCHOOL LAST YEAR. IT’S SIMILAR TO WHEN ATHLETES SIGNING LETTERS OF INTENT TO PLAY COLLEGE SPORTS. GREG FLOWERS/PROUD VETERAN OF THE COMMUNITY: “I WANTED TO PUT THEM ON A PEDESTAL I WANTED TO SHOW THEM HOW PROUD WE ARE, THE COMMUNITY AS VETERANS AS TEACHERS AND COACHES WE CAME UP WITH A SIGNING DAY.” A DAY KOCI WILL NEVER FORGET. BRYCE KOCI: “IT’S FANTASTIC THE SUPPORT IS OUTSTANDING I’VE NEVER FELT ANYTHING LIKE THIS HONESTLY TO SEE EVERYONE COME TOGETHER AND SUPPORT I DIDN’T THINK IT WAS GOING TO BE THIS BIG OF A TURNOUT IT’S AMAZING.” KOCI THE ONLY SON OF 4 CHILDREN SAYS THE DECISION WASN’T EASY TO TELL HIS PARENTS AT FIRST. “THEY SUPPORT ME BUT THEY WERE HOPING I WOULD CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PATH BUT I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND.” STANDING HERE WITH HIS FATHER BOB AND A PHOTO OF HIS GRANDFATHER, A SPITTING IMAGE – BRYCE WILL CARRY ON THE FAMILY TRADITION OF SERVING OUR COUNTRY. BOB KOCI/FATHER: “VERY PROUD OF HIM OUR FAMILY HAS A HISTORY OF MILITARY SERVICE I HOWEVER DID NOT SERVE IT’S A REGRET I PERSONALLY HAD AND I FEEL HE’S FILLING A GAP.” ELYSE: BRYCE WILL REPORT TO FORT BENNING, GEORGIA ON AUGUST 17TH. THE SCHOOL DECIDED THEY WILL DO A MILITARY SIGNING EVENT EVERY YEAR. LOCAL FOR YOU IN LEWIS CENTER ELYSE CHENGERY NBC 4.
