(SN) A VERY MOVING SCENE IN NEWPORT– THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. (HE) THOUSANDS OF BOOTS AND AMERICAN FLAGS ARE AT FORT ADAMS– TO HONOR THOSE WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR THEIR COUNTRY. (SN) THIS ANNUAL DISPLAY– WILL BE OPEN ALL WEEKEND LONG. (HE) METEOROLOGIST T-J DEL SANTO HEADED TO NEWPORT– TO GET A FIRST HAND LOOK– AT THIS TOUCHING TRIBUTE. NEARLY 7,000 BOOTS ON THE GROUND HERE AT FORT ADAMS STATE PARK, A TRULY REMARKABLE DISPLAY ON THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. The real reason we have Memorial Day is right there. It’s these people who laid down their life and made the ultimate sacrifce in service of their nation. HISTORIC FORT ADAMS IN NEWPORT IS BASE CAMP FOR THIS YEAR’S BOOTS ON THE GROUND FOR HEROES MEMORIAL. This depicts all the fallen service members who were killed in action post 9-11. So since the Global War on Terror started, any one that was killed in action is depicted out there on that field Each fallen service member has a boot, an American flag and a placard with their name in their honor. 84 rows of flags and boots from every state, except for the 29 Rhode Islanders who were killed in action…they are in this circle. 6957 boots. It’s a living memorial. Each year, when new service men or women give the ultimate sacrifice, a new boot is added. Sky Drone 12 shows what nearly 7,000 boots on the ground look like from the air…. this vast field is a place for quiet contemplation. MIKE FANNING IS VISITING THE MEMORIAL FROM TEXAS. My wife and i checked it out and there were like 15 rows of Texas boots. Although he doesn’t know anyone represented in this sea of flags and boots, the meaning is not lost on him. I’m moved that this means so much to so many. I know it inspired my own service for sure. AND THE BOOTS ON THE GROUND FOR HEROES DISPLAY
