A year ago. I started complaining to my mother about not being able to see the whiteboard and I was like, oh man I’m gonna get glasses now I went to dr. Cox office and she had done a bunch of tests on my eyes She came back and she’s like you need to go to the ER now I got dragged to my MRI and that’s where they found that I had a tumor in my brain One doctor was like right. She that we’re gonna try to save you from going blind. I was like, what he just say? When I first got home from the hospital I came home like I couldn’t see everything Oh God Don’t cry Once I got back into school That was the bad part The kids were like so cruel. They called me names. They would kick my cane. They’d push me I asked my mom at what point I was like, why did that happen to me? But on the other time I also do have people that are like really supportive and I have made new friends and it’s a whole ‘nother side to life that I never knew about I had people that were in my corner trying to help me learn I was making the best light of what I have been dealt cuz I was like, you know things happen. You still look the same You still act the same. It’s just you can’t see as well. We all got your back all day People always say you can’t do this you can’t do that you can’t do this You can’t do that, but you can do it. You got it How are you? I’m good. How are you? Well fantastic. Tell us all about you your story your name My name is Shayy Winn but I go by Shayy. I’m 17 years old I go to the specialty center of Performing Arts at Thomasdale high school I am just went became legally blind. I should say about a year ago What was the name of the disease? I had hydrocephalus which is too much fluid in the brain Which caused me to have swelling of the optic nerves and that’s when they found that I had a tumor in my head that they think was there all my life But they’re not really sure when it got there. Now. Did they get the tumor out or is it? 50% of it and to get the entire tumor out. They would have had to done Open cranium surgery and they said no that’s a little too dangerous. So we’re not gonna go there What are the doctors telling you? Basically, I’m like a question mark. I don’t like that. okay. We’ll pray for you and pray for the doctors and I pray that technology can get your sight back. Thank you Well, I definitely want to hear after that story I want to hear about your amazing voice and what you’re gonna do for us tonight. Okay? Well, I’m gonna be singing of Rise Up by Andra Day. Just something comes along like this So Shay you have what we cannot teach that’s right we cannot teach people to just sing like I’ve never seen Lionel cry this much. We cannot teach Letting the music flow straight from the soul, and that’s what you did. It just pours out of you.
