Jack Melnick was a Polish Jewish immigrant who moved to the east end in 1894. A few years later he married Matilda Posener. In 1912, Jack and Matlida had a daughter named Eva. “What a cute baby.” Unfortunately Matlida became very sick with tuberculosis and she died in 1915. After Matlida died, Jack was very sad and decided to join the British Army in France. Eva has been living with her grandmother, when she received a postcard from her father. Sadly Jack went missing in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. Eva received the British war medal awarded to Jack for his service. We still do not know what happened to Jack. But we will still always remember his story.
