This news segment by KLRU brought to you byTexas Mutual Insurance. I’m Dawn and I am the founder of Dance Another World. Alright! So we’re doing that part right now! Dance Another World is an English immersion non-profit taught through dance. Dance Another World works with young non-native English speaking girls primarily from lower socio-economic areas. We’re at T.A. Brown, but we did just get our vendor number so that’s essentially
a grant through the school district to be able to be offered at any of the schools in the school districts. It’s about half and half. It’s about half reading and writing and half dance. There’s a lot of conversation in there
because in Dance Another World we speak English. What does a chance mean? When you have an opportunity so you will get one more chance to do something? Good job! That was a big word. That was very cool. Primarily conversational English but we have a lot of reading and writing
activities. We know that a dance is a story. So
we will read and write our own stories. And then we will portray them in a dance. Or we will watch other dances and write a story to that. A lot of our language learning in our
education system is translation and translation doesn’t work. If you see this
table, you have to think mesa. You can’t think table then translate
it to mesa. It’s just a lot less pressure, you know.
Language is such a mental thing and these girls are immersed in an
english-language program where they want to know, “Ms. Dawn which
direction do I go? Do I go to the right?” They want to know that so it’s allowing the girls to focus and work on their English but put their
energy towards the passion of the art and dance. This news segment from KLRU was brought to you by Texas Mutual Insurance.
